Two major projects at LiU have each garnered MSEK 5 in a substantial staking of visualization research.

The financial backers are the Knowledge Foundation, Vinnova (the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems), the Vårdal Foundation - for Health Care Sciences and Allergy Research, and Invest in Sweden AB (ISA).

A virtual autopsy project is led by Anders Persson, radiologist and manager at the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV). This is a multidisciplinary research center initiated by Linköping University, the Östergötland County Council and Sectra AB from the international business sphere. For several years, the Center has researched noninvasive techniques for post-mortem examination. The new project takes continued development into the implementation stage. A foreseeable applications area is crime investigation.

The purpose of the second project is to create software for data mining through visualization of statistic analysis, mainly geographic-based statistics. Firms in the field of consumer behavior and market analysis, or firms supplying logistics and transportation, are two types of anticipated industrial partners. The project research team for information and geovisualization at the Department of Science and Technology is led by professor Mikael Jern.

In addition to these two projects, LiU participates in a project for three-dimensional visualization for clinical use. The team leader there is Mårten Sjöström at Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet).

The entire visualization research program will allocate MSEK 85 over a 3-year period. In the current grant dispersal, MSEK 30 was allocated to a rotaal of eight visualization projects.
